Mayor

Mr. Mayor, you are at the threshold of your mandate. To what extent have you fulfilled your electoral promises?

We have tried to meet up with most of our promises. We have created access to communication through the “Konye Community Radio”. This radio mobilizes the population, get them informed on vital national issues and also educate them particularly farmers on new trends.  Secondly, we made efforts to boost tourism in Konye by linking up with partners in Belgium in a bid to develop our touristic sites. We have a lot of waterfalls, traditional sites and caves that if well developed, Konye would become a tourist center. We have also supported vaccination activities, improved health services, provided pipe-born water in needy areas and engaged on extension of electricity to different villages. Through the public investment budgets we have built classrooms, provided benches and didactic materials to several schools. We have rehabilitated roads, supported youth and women projects and built market shops and a business center in the municipality. We are currently constructing a guest house with close to FCFA 280 million funding from FEICOM, and a bridge over River Mongo at Ngolo-Bolo at the cost of FCFA 335 million.

What do you consider as major obstacles to the people of Konye?

One of our major obstacles has just been removed. The tarring of Kumba-Mamfe road is a life-saving project to the people of Konye. We thank the Head of State, President Paul Biya, for that. Existing obstacles include the inability for our farmers to benefit from intensive agriculture. The majority of our populations are made of farmers who are still involved in the tertiary stage of farming. Farmers need a lot of funding to transform methods of production, to acquire machines. The rate of youth unemployment remains very high. Improved agriculture would certainly provide jobs for the young people.

What impact has the Mayors’ salaries on council management?

I thank the Head of State for instituting salaries for municipal administrators. In fact, before then, the situation was very deplorable. Mayors and their deputies relied only on allowances. Instituting these salaries is actually putting the Mayor on a particular status and I think that it is a very big motivation.  It ameliorates the financial standing and social status of the Mayor. It would also reduce the tendency for fall into temptations of corrupt practices.

Any message for your population?

I wish to call on the population of Konye to remain hospitable, hard working, law abiding and as responsible as they have been always. I want to invite the elite to join the local population in building Konye. Elite constitute a wonderful force which if harnessed, would change the face of Konye and the living standards of its people. Together we stand!
